Cambodia buses: day coaches, night sleepers and vans
Buses and vans are the main way to travel in Cambodia. Phnom Penh to Siem Reap takes about 6 hours from about USD 9, Kampot or Sihanoukville 3 to 4 hours, Battambang 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours, and Ho Chi Minh City 6 to 7 hours across the border. Night sleepers run Phnom Penh to Siem Reap and Siem Reap to the coast. Each company leaves from its own office, so check the address on your ticket.

Across the borders
- Vietnam: buses from Phnom Penh to Ho Chi Minh City cross at Bavet and Mộc Bài; vans from Kampot and Kep cross to Hà Tiên at Prek Chak. See the Cambodia–Vietnam border guide.
- Laos: buses and vans from Siem Reap and Phnom Penh reach Stung Treng and the Trapeang Kriel crossing for Pakse and the 4000 Islands; see the Cambodia–Laos border guide.
- Thailand: the land border is closed, so no bus crosses it; see the Cambodia–Thailand border guide.

Night buses, vans, tickets and luggage
Day bus, night sleeper or van
- Day coaches (Giant Ibis, Capitol, Virak Buntham and others) stop for a meal or a rest break. Giant Ibis gives each passenger water and a pastry and has Wi-Fi that drops out in the countryside.
- Night sleepers have flat berths instead of seats. On Giant Ibis's Phnom Penh–Siem Reap night bus there is a toilet on board, a pillow and blanket, berths of about 1.8 m (one 2 m berth at the back), no passenger stops and a short driver change at Kampong Thom. Giant Ibis does not pick up from hotels for night buses.
- Vans (Larryta, Kimseng, EVGo and others) seat 8 to 15 and are often the fastest choice: Phnom Penh to Kampot in about 3 hours, Battambang in 4 hours 30 minutes.
Where buses leave from
There is no single bus station in Phnom Penh: each company leaves from its own office, and the address is on the ticket. Giant Ibis uses its terminal on Street 106 by the Night Market; Capitol leaves from near Orussey market. Some companies pick up free from partner hotels on day services. In Battambang, many vans end at Boeng Chhuk bus station rather than in the centre. Tuk-tuks wait at most offices; see the tuk-tuk guide.
Tickets and luggage
Buy online, at the company's office or through your guesthouse. Keep the e-ticket on your phone; Giant Ibis asks for the ticket or an ID to board.
Rules differ by company and even within one. Giant Ibis's route pages say 20 kg of luggage and 30 minutes before departure; its terms say one carry-on plus up to two stored bags of 25 kg in all, and 35 minutes. Its tickets are non-refundable but can be changed once, with 24 hours' notice. A ticket bought from a booking site follows that site's conditions, so read them before paying.
From the airports
- Phnom Penh (KTI): the Airport Express city bus runs daily from 05:30 to 23:30 into the centre; see the Phnom Penh airport guide.
- Siem Reap (SAI): the airport shuttle costs USD 8 each way to its town station on Makara Road; see the Siem Reap airport guide.
